In
the last few years, industrialised countries are becoming increasingly
aware of the need to develop alternatives to fossil fuels, not
only because of environmental concern, but also because of the
issues related to the security of energy supply. All renewable
energy sources offer the opportunity to replace a part of fossil
fuels, however due to its nature biomass has the highest potential
in the near future.
In order for biomass to take a greater role in energy supply,
several barriers
need to be overcome. Technological progress by itself can not
break down the non-technical barriers which hamper the penetration
of biomass and other renewable energy technologies in the energy
markets. A long-term stable framework, covering political, legislative,
administrative, economic and marketing aspects is a necessary
prerequisite for the economic operations involved in the development
of all renewable energy sources.
In fact, most industrialised countries have developed a comprehensive
action plan and specific policy documents defining future
targets for increasing the share of renewables in their
energy mix. |
